Namaste and Welcome to SublimeSelf
This is a place where we can learn, share and grow together. I want to inspire you to teach yourself new things, learn things about yourself and become healthy in mind, body and soul.
I want to tell you a little bit about my life and how I have benefited from using natural techniques and therapies.
I was born South African but have been living in the UK for 4 years. My parents are divorced and both remarried. I was very active growing up and played netball and did athletics. At school I was one of the top students and a natural born leader. By the age of 13 I occasionally started having trouble breathing and extreme pains in my stomach. I went to the hospital on several occasions. Many tests were done and we were repeatedly told that it was "stress". How could someone at the age of thirteen be suffering from stress related dis-ease?
At the age of 15, I moved and went to live with my father and stepmother. I started feeling faint on the netball court and also had severe headaches and stomach cramps. As we lived in a high Malaria area, I went for blood tests.
A few nights later, I received a call from my doctor. My cholesterol count had come back as 8.9. Now, if you know about it, you'll gasp. People who have heart attacks have their count at 10-12. Normal count is between 4 and 5.
I was also hypoglycaemic. When I have too much sugar, I feel faint. When I don't eat regularly, I feel irritable and feel shaky. When I drink energy drinks for netball, it worsens the situation and I feel weak and have fainted on court.
Here I was, a healthy 16 year old who played sport, went to the gym, admittedly smoking 10 cigarettes a day and not eating very healthily.
My diet changed dramatically. I was given Lipitor for my cholesterol and all sugar and refined sugar was cut out of my diet. I lost a lot of weight in a few days. I switched to lighter cigarettes.
Then I moved to London…
I could not afford Lipitor, so went without it. I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and still kept my unhealthy habits.
That was until 3 years ago. I slowly got introduced to Yoga, meditation and healthy living. Admittedly, my stepmother had been trying to get me into this for years. All I can say is this, "If someone is not ready, they are not ready. When making a change in your lifestyle, baby steps are essential."
I started eating an occasional salad. I practised deep breathing and deep relaxation. I did yoga once a week. I still smoked and ate take-aways. I had my cholesterol tested and it was down to 6.4
I was given medication for the IBS and I threw it away after a day. It made my stomach bloat ridiculously and made my body and mind feel very disconnected. I did some research and when I read about all the side-effects, I was shocked. I was furious with my GP for prescribing it and not informing me of the consequences.
I then focused more on my meditation and healthy eating. I learnt to pay attention to my inner dialogue and to realise when and where I am stressed. I ate more salad and fruit. By now, my stomach and breathing problems were a thing of the past.
I am now drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, eating a healthy "rainbow" salad every day with a healthy dressing
(recipe found here). Mark and I go for regular walks when he gets home from work, we do some stretching afterwards, we try to keep our red meat intake low and when we do eat it, it is organic. We have a daily fruit smoothie with supergreens.
I try to meditate and do yoga daily. I quit smoking. My last cholesterol count was 5.2. We only drink on special occasions. I keep a dream diary and a journal of gratitude. I do volunteer work and still play netball.
If someone had told me that this is the way I would be living, I would have been rather surprised. And surprisingly, it has been the easiest changes- if you do it one step at a time. My mind, body and soul seem to embrace and love it. I feel and look great and love every day. I am very fortunate to have a husband who supports me and loves the "healthy living" lifestyle.
I still stress but I have learnt to manage it. I still get angry but I learn to release it. I still get sad and I embrace it. I have learnt to accept myself and I have realised that I am the diamond underneath all the layers- I am not the layers…And I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
I am now a qualified Hypnotherapist, Relaxation Therapist and Counsellor. I have studied other things along the way and will continue to study until I die.
