Acupressure

You might have heard of Acupuncture. Now, Acupressure is needle-less Acupuncture. It works on the same principles but is easier to use and does not always require a professional to do.

I will give you the background on Oriental Medicine first:

The Orientals believed that energy circulated and nourished the whole person through specific pathways along the body. This energy is called Chi and the pathways are called meridians.

Chi is defined as life force, energy, vitality, or quite simply as that which makes us alive. In order for us to live optimally and efficiently, the Chi needs to be balanced.

Yin and Yang are the two manifestations of Chi. Everything in the Oriental way of life is based on the relationship between the Yin and the Yang.  When the balance is right, optimum health is obtained. When there is an imbalance, dis-ease is experienced.

Meridians are energy highways along which Chi moves. Each of the 12 organs is linked with a meridian, named according to the internal organ it affects. The meridians, like rivers of energy, ensure the proper flow of Chi throughout your entire body and causes ill health when blocked. Half of the meridians flow upwards (YIN) and the other half flow downwards (YANG). To stimulate a meridian you work in the direction of the meridian flow. To sedate the meridian, you work against the flow.

There are 12 meridians named after organs and 2 extra ones:

Because the meridians serve the whole body from inside out and outside in, they have a dual role. They prevent harmful energies (bacteria and viruses) from entering the body. They also indicate the presence of harmful energy already inside the body in the form of symptoms.

Acupoints act like traffic lights on the meridians. When a certain section of the meridian is blocked, the acupoint acts like a red traffic light and prevents the Chi from flowing. By stimulating the point we release the energy (make the traffic light green) and allow the energy to flow again.

Acupressure works by stimulating different acupoints and can be used for almost all common ailments.

Caution should be taken when pregnant as there are many points that induce labour.
